Kids Dentist Q & A

Why do I need a kids’ dentist?

Babies, children, and teens are still growing, and that includes their jaws and teeth. As a pediatric dentist, Dr. Lardizabal understands the dental anatomy of developing babies and children.

She maintains your child’s oral health from the moment their first tooth emerges, around the age of six months to one year. If your baby hasn’t developed a tooth by their first birthday, you should still see Dr. Lardizabal.

As your child’s teeth emerge, Dr. Lardizabal ensures they’re healthy and strong. She teaches your children proper brushing technique, regularly examines and cleans their teeth, and treats any issues at an early stage.

How often should my children see a kids’ dentist?

Bring your children to see Dr. Lardizabal at least twice a year for an examination and cleaning. Dr. Lardizabal also recommends twice yearly fluoride treatments to strengthen the protective enamel that keeps their teeth strong and healthy. Your child may need to see Dr. Lardizabal more frequently if they have cavities or other issues.

What does a kids’ dentist do?

Your child needs some of the same types of care and procedures that adults do. Dr. Lardizabal helps kids with:

  • Thorough mouth examinations
  • Professional dental cleaning
  • Digital X-rays to check tooth growth and identify cavities
  • Cavity treatment and fillings
  • Treatment for gum disease (periodontics)
  • Temporary or permanent tooth replacement

Your child may also need:

  • Fluoride treatments
  • Dental sealants to prevent cavities
  • Invisalign to straighten teeth
  • Treatment for snoring
  • Mouthguard to prevent teeth grinding
  • Mouthguard for protection during sports

Dr. Lardizabal highly recommends sealants to protect childrens’ teeth from cavities while they develop their own reliable oral-hygiene routine.  Tooth decay is the most common childhood illness in the United States.

What if my child is afraid of the dentist?

Some children are afraid of the dentist because a dentist’s visit is outside of their normal routine. You can help them adjust to the experience by playing dentist with them at home, using their stuffed animals or dolls. You can also bring them for a “Meet the Dentist” appointment, so they get used to the We Care Dental staff.

Dr. Lardizabal and every team member at We Care Dental have also been trained in how to be gentle and soothing to children so that they feel at home. To make Dr. Lardizabal part of your child’s care team, contact We Care Dental by phone or online form.
